Most auto insurance policies are still sold for 12 months. As during a 12 month period the needs of drivers may change, short term insurance can now be secured potentially providing a better value and more flexible solution.
Short term auto insurance is usually referred to as policies ranging from 1 to 28 days. However, flexible short term insurance cover is now available for between 1 to 8 months.
There are even now extremely flexible policies available for longer than one month. This gives the option to switch insurance on and off for periods when it will not be required.
There are numerous scenarios where temp cover may be convenient. One of the most common is making sure you are protected when borrowing a friends vehicle. Securing an additional policy for this could protect a no claims bonus built up if no claim has been made for a while. This could therefore be a cost effective option for more experienced drivers.
Another reason temp insurance is taken out is to provide cover for an additional driver so driving can be shared on a longer journey.
Insuring a foreign guest while they are visiting is popular reason. As is requiring drive away cover after buying a second hand or new vehicle from a dealer. Taking a car test drive and requiring cover for a day or weekend can be another reason.
Not many van drivers actually own the vehicle themselves. This can be where 1 day car insurance cover is necessary, when you’re borrowing a van for a range of reasons.
For those riders that are planning a summer road trip or perhaps attending a biking convention or meet-up, temp car insurance could be useful if the motorbike you are riding is not one you use regularly. This could be very beneficial if they will only be using the bike while they are away.
